Palo Duro Canyon

WELCOME TO TEXAS!  DRIVE FRIENDLY, THE TEXAS WAY!

October 11

"We are on our way to Amarillo Texas to see Palo Duro Canyon State Park, a place I found in my road trip book late last night at our Air BNB.  Up until Oklahoma City we had a pretty good idea, although loosely scheduled, of where we were going.  Now it's going to take a little more planning for this final week."

The first morning I woke up with the sun.  I crawled out of the tent and spent a lot of time taking pictures of everything.  I couldn’t believe where we were, it had been dark when we arrived. The changing light made everything so exciting.  We hiked the the Lighthouse trail that day.  Even when starting in the morning it was in the 90’s, and only got hotter.  The trail was flat almost the entire way but hard because of the heat. As we walked through the canyon I couldn’t stop thinking and saying “wow” at all the colors and textures.

"After driving around the canyon as the sun set we lied in the hammock under the stars.  The man on the motorcycle camping to our right started playing guitar and singing by his fire.  It was so good and some songs we knew.  A lot about being lost and traveling and love.  To our left two old men were camping together and we could hear bits of their conversation through the music.  It sounded like old friends who hadn't seen each other in a long time catching up.  It was such a beautiful moment.  We played cards after, some spit and war.  Sleep that night was impossible due to the wind, it was so strong and loud.  We couldn't sleep at all.  The mosquito net blew down at some point and I was surprised it hadn't blown away.
